It will be a premium feature initially before it is rolled out to all US users.
YouTube introduces a much-anticipated feature to its iPhone app: Picture-in-Picture (PiP). All Premium subscribers will soon have access to the viewer, and YouTube says it plans to enable PiP for all iOS users in the US.
A YouTube spokesperson told Engadget: "Picture-in-Picture allows users to watch YouTube videos in a small mini player while simultaneously browsing outside of the YouTube app on their mobile devices." We have started rolling out PiP to YouTube Premium members on iOS, and plans to release PiP to all iOS users in the US as well.”
Apple brought PiP to the iPhone last year as part of iOS 14. Several video streaming apps already support this feature, including Netflix, Twitch, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and Apple TV. Although it supports PiP on Android since 2018, YouTube was a notable holdup on iOS until its stance changed, which was first reported by MacRumors.
Some iOS users have found alternative solutions to watch YouTube through PiP. It has sometimes worked via the YouTube mobile site and some people have been able to access it through shortcuts. YouTube did not reveal the timeline for the rollout of PiP, but in the end these solutions will not be needed.
Support for PiP on the YouTube app has been long overdue, and it's good to see that it won't be available only to Premium members, at least in the US. Personally, I'm looking forward to going back and watching the chaotic Overwatch League matches on a young player while reading the reactions on Twitter.
