Singapore is known for two things: a very low crime rate, and impeccable cleanliness. For this reason, Singapore is a popular tourist destination for many tourists and travel enthusiasts. But if you are going to visit Singapore this summer, you must take into account these strange laws imposed by the state.
Weird Laws You Will Only Find In Singapore!
1-Singing In Public
This may sound strange but it is true. Singing in public is illegal in Singapore as it is considered annoying to the public. If you break this law, you could end up with 3 months in prison or a big fine!
2-Connect To Someone Else's Wifi
Using someone else's WiFi is defined as hacking by Singapore Internet Cell and E-Cell.
Doing so could result in at least 3 years in prison or you could end up paying a hefty $10,000 fine or both.
So, don't even think about using someone else's internet without their knowledge in Singapore!
3-Feeding Pigeons
It may not seem like a criminal offence, but one of the strange laws that Singapore enforces is that it is forbidden to feed pigeons in public.
Singapore imposes this fine to prevent toilet waste from being littered everywhere to keep its streets clean. If you are caught with this felony, you will have to pay a fine of $500.
4-Smoking In Public
Smoking in public places and in vehicles is against the law in Singapore. This law was implemented to ensure a healthy environment for residents and hikers and to protect non-smokers and people in general from secondhand smoke.
You could end up paying a fine of $700 if you light a cigarette in a public place. And if you insist on smoking, it is better to be indoors.
5-Throwing Trash In Public
Being fined for littering in public may not seem odd or ostracized, but being fined up to $300 for throwing a cigarette funnel does.
Hygiene is taken very seriously in Singapore. If you throw small items like cigarette sticks or candy wrappers on the streets, you will be fined $300 if you use the tuning device for the first time.
However, if you have been convicted 3 times, you may have to clean the streets once a week with an apron marked “I am rubbish!” This is done to publicly humiliate the offender so that he does not repeat this action again.
6-Selling Chewing Gum Is Illegal!
Chewing gum is OK, but it is illegal to sell gum in Singapore. You could end up with two years in prison or a $100,000 fine if you get caught smuggling gum into the country!
7-Spitting In Public
Spitting in any public place is a serious crime in this country. It is illegal to spit in markets, cafes, roadsides, etc.
You could be fined as little as $1,000 if caught red-handed!
8-Tighten The Siphon In The Toilets
It is good practice to tighten the siphon after using a public toilet. Imagine forgetting to do this in Singapore! Then you will have to pay a fine of $150 and there is no reason to forget!
